Using ROS Indigo on a Raspberry Pi2/Banana Pi is no longer an hard procedure, but still it’s a tedious and long task.

There is an excellent tutorial on the Ros Wiki (link) to install step-by-step the whole Ros infrastructure on the Pi. Following such procedure needs a couple of hours ( five or more on the first raspberry!) on the Pi2 or on the Banana, so i decided to share our master image.

The idea is to provide some images ROS-ready. At the moment I’m not really sure if there is a clear performances advantage between the ROS (core parts!) binaries from the armhf repository with respect to the compiled version from sources but I’ll investigate.

In the meantime we are using different kind of images for different tasks (on board computer, teaching, demos…) so, why not sharing them? 🙂

AVAILABLE IMAGES

Raspberry Pi 2, basic ROS INDIGO image 1GB compressed, 16GB uncompressed.

raspbian 2015-05-05, updated on 2015-05-019, pi2 overclock from the raspi-config menu

(if you don’t have a 16GB sd card available you can follow this amazing tutorial about resizing images in linux, i will provide already resized images in the future, i’ll promise)

Customizations:

  • locale in .bashrc
  • static ip for the ethernet 192.168.1.200
  • ros_comm installation (the most basic one) to let the user to customize with required packages

Customizations:

  • everyday ROS use (comm, std_msgs, geometry_msgs, sensor_msgs…, navigation, image…)
  • reallly lightweight windows manager (customized fluxbox, use startx  to make it start)

Note:

this image has been used during a ROS workshops at the City of Science of Naples and it’s a good starting point for projects or to explore the power of ROS on rapsberry.

I’d like to provide some more images with more customizations and stuff like that (raspberry pi2, banana pi, odroid c1…)
